AT5048: AN INTRODUCTION TO ETHNOGRAPHIC RESEARCH METHODS

First Term

Ethnography brings you closer to your social world by giving you new insights into cultures communities and organisations. This online course explores qualitative techniques in social science through the practice of ethnography. Skills covered include participant observation, fieldnotes, interviewing and practical learning, while also exploring the ethics of research and analysis. Teaching materials include online video lectures, specially selected readings and a range of supplementary content.

AT5052: MUSEUMS AND SUSTAINABLE FUTURES

15 credits

Level 5

First Term

Put ecologically responsible, socially conscious knowledge and practice at the top of your agenda with Museums and Sustainable Futures. With our thematic lectures and practical activities, you’ll gain core experience in this key area of contemporary museum work.

Between 31st October and 12 November 2021, the UK will host COP26, the UN Climate Change Conference, in Glasgow. But in June 2021, the Climate Change Committee’s annual report noted that the UK Government has done little to deliver on its ambitious 2030 emissions and 2050 net zero goals. Furthermore, the outbreak of COVID-19 which reached global pandemic status in 2020, is indicative of the vulnerable, and currently unsustainable, position of Western industrial economic and social systems. Museums and Sustainable Futures aims to give students the knowledge and capacity to deal with some of these difficult questions. By exploring a variety of themes and case studies in this are the course aims to offer experience and confidence in this important part of contemporary practice. The course is ideal for emerging professionals, early career practitioners, and established professionals keen on upskilling, and examining the possibilities for museums in a sustainably minded future.

AT5054: ETHNOGRAPHIC RESEARCH PROJECT

30 credits

Level 5

First Term

This course will enable you to carry out a piece of original ethnographic research. You will design, conduct and write up a research project that uses ethnographic methods. A key feature is individual support from an experienced supervisor who will guide you each step of the way. The course will suit those who have an idea for an ethnographic research project and who already have training or experience in ethnographic research methods.

Gain skills and confidence with Digital Museum Practice. With our thematic lectures and practical activities, you’ll gain core experience in this key area of contemporary museum work.

Digital Museum Practice is intended to offer knowledge and skills development in relation to the use of digital technology in museums. By exploring a variety of themes and technologies in this area, the course aims to offer individuals experience and confidence in this important part of contemporary professional practice. The course is ideal for emerging professionals and early career practitioners who are looking to increase their digital confidence, and examine the possibilities of further qualifications in the field.
