Course Description

Students are required to undertake a significant project in small groups on comparative assessment addressing, for a given case, the technical challenges, legal and economic aspects, as well as safety, team work and project management. This module builds on the knowledge acquired in the two half sessions and aims to enhance the students’ understanding and knowledge of the many disciplines that comprise decommissioning.  The students will work in groups and will need to co-ordinate their effort and contributions from each member of their small team.

The project will cover the requirements of comparative assessment (CA) for decommissioning plan and other assessment frameworks that may be used in conjunction with CA.  This will include assessment of items including:
• Energy consumption
• Energy consumption
• Environmental aspects
• Safety and risk
• Technical feasibility
• Socio-economics
• Reuse or removal and recycling of materials/equipment

Case studies will be considered based on, for example, the Inde decommissioning project (complete removal of structure and transport onshore for deconstruction), Northwest Hutton (Deconstruction of topside by module and cutting up of jacket, removal by heavily lift), Brent (potential single lift of topside) or Murchison, or Ekofisk Tank, or other piece small removal(s).

Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 30 August 2024 for 1st term courses and 20 December 2024 for 2nd term courses.
