Course Description

Building on Ethnographic Research Methods 1, this course will support you in producing a piece of original ethnographic research. You will work with a dedicated course tutor to design and carry out a project using core ethnographic skills. Week by week, teaching materials will open up new perspectives on doing research and give you the confidence to become a successful ethnographic researcher. Specific topics covered alongside your project work include: creating a research proposal, learning from previous research, advanced qualitative data analysis, and writing up your results. A feature of the course is the individualised support from the course tutor who will guide you each step of the way in your project.

The course will give you the opportunity to demonstrate your research skills through two pieces of assessment. Near the start of the course, staff will support you in writing a research proposal (500 words) that sets out the aims, methods and ethics of your project. When this is successfully completed, you can begin work on the research itself. The final submission of your research project (2500 words) will take place at the end of the course.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Develop and communicate your own original ideas for ethnographic research
  • Use the core skills of ethnography to carry out your research project
  • Analyse ethnographic data that you have gathered
  • Write up your research into a professional ethnographic report

Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 30 August 2024 for 1st term courses and 20 December 2024 for 2nd term courses.
