Last modified: 25 Sep 2019 09:58

Course Overview

In this course we will examine different representations of the city and interventions in cities from the late 19th century up to the present day. In the past century cities in Spain and elsewhere have gone through various radical transformations. The relations between people and their urban environments have taken on new forms and rhythms. We will study influential theories about the city and twentieth-century urban life. We will also study Spanish novels, film, poetry, urban development projects, pop culture and social movements that have centred on the use or representation of city space.

Course Description

This course will acquaint students with spatial theory and its usefulness for literary and cultural analysis. It also offers a broad overview of the history of the city in 19th and 20th century Spain, as it has related to historical developments like industrialization, the civil war, the dictatorship, the transition to democracy, postmodern consumer culture and globalization. By the end of the course students should have a sound knowledge of spatial analysis and the major developments in twentieth-century Spanish urban culture. They should also be able to analyse, drawing appropriate parallels and contrasts, different representations and uses of the city.
