Course Overview

The health economics project is an independent piece of work undertaken by students which allow them to demonstrate in depth the skills and knowledge acquired on the MSc and apply these to a research question. Under expert supervision, each student independently and creatively identifies and formulates a research question which they address using appropriate methodology.

Course Description

Students will identify and address an economics driven research question arising from their own work experience and/or their study of the material from the MSc Programme in Health Economics for Health Professionals using methods of enquiry drawn from their taught courses within the Programme. They will have two supervisors from the University of Aberdeen. Depending on the type of project undertaken (academic research or practice-based project), students will be guided to either submit a report or academic research publication.

 

Course Aims:

To give the students direct experience of the design, management and delivery of a research project.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. Select and critically appraise appropriate evidence from the wider research literature
  2. Develop a high-quality problem statement and translate this into research questions or hypotheses
  3. Design and justify appropriate and methodologically sound empirical study that will address these research questions/hypotheses
  4. Identify data requirements, data availability and collect and/or organise necessary data
  5. Analyse, interpret and present project data appropriately
  6. Critically reflect on the quality of one’s research and the contribution of the obtained results
  7. Communicate project outputs according to recognised standards and format within discipline
  8. Demonstrate professional practice in the management of research project including time-management, record keeping, confidentiality, communication and team work
