Course Overview

Set within the context of the Inter-American Cold War, this course addresses one of the seminal events of the twentieth century: the coup against Chile’s democratically-elected Socialist government led by Salvador Allende, as well as the nature of the counter-revolution and dictatorship which followed and their contemporary legacies within the politics and society of Chile.

Course Description

The course will follow a hybrid project-based learning format; that is to say that, as well as attending traditional lectures, students are also required to address a project-based learning problem in small groups throughout the semester. 

The lecture series will set out Chile’s contemporary political history while introducing a number of theories from with the fields of Politics and International Relations, such as democratic transition, counter-insurgency, human rights, transitional justice and the politics of memory.  These theoretical frameworks will be used by student research groups to address and tackle the project-based learning scenario set out at the beginning of the course. 

The course will be assessed by group (50%) and individual (50%) components.  The group assessment will provide students with an element in choice in terms of the way in which they would like to address the project-based learning scenario.      In terms of assessment, the course thus contains individual and group work elements (50%).
