Last modified: 23 Jul 2024 11:10

Course Overview

Ideas and ideologies are core to teaching, learning and research in Politics and International Relations. Theoretical developments are at the forefront of academic debates within the discipline, demonstrated by the appearance of a number of new approaches as more traditional theories have struggled to account for an ever changing world. This course will introduce students to these with profound questions and struggles over identity, belonging, justice and rights underpinning these theoretical debates.

Course Description

Politics and IR is obviously about power, allocation of resources and conflict. But it is also about ideas. Indeed, throughout history - but especially in recent centuries - whole revolutions have been sustained and global conflict has pivoted around such ideas as fascism, communism, democracy and so forth. This course explores both the theories that underpin international politics and the ideologies that have animated citizens around the world. From #MeToo to the current climate emergency, we can see that these ideas are as important as ever.
