Course Overview

This ten week course follows a similar teaching pattern to the Key Moments courses. Five topics are covered in detail, An initial fortnightly lecture introduces the topic and the first of two weekly seminars is a workshop on practical aspects of the topic. For the second seminar, the session is split into 4 where coursework is presented, critiqued and evaluated by the group, facilitated by members of staff/PGR students. There will be some non-formal analysis and wherever possible links through to the Key Moments 2 course will be explored. Topics will cover a variety of musical styles and genres.

Course Description

Course Aims

 

  • to develop technical skills, allowing for further development in personal compositional work;
  • to develop in students a range of skills, techniques and understanding to enable them to become effective composers;
  • to extend their musical studies through hands-on working in a variety compositional styles;
  • to develop skills in using technology to create music and sound art.


Main Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students should have made progress in the ability:

  • to apply methods of aural and written analysis to the process of composition;
  • to use notation effectively;
  • to use technology effectively in the creation of music and sound art;
  • to display awareness of the musical, structural and technical aspects of the compositional process;
  • to communicate an applied knowledge and understanding of the techniques and aesthetic processes involved in creating music;
  • to demonstrate ability to take on board advice and suggestions from peer group composers and performers.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt

5 pieces of coursework, reworked and submitted as one portfolio of compositional work (summative) (100%).

Resit

Students resubmit the portfolio of compositions (100%)

Formative Assessment

Students will be assessed formatively throughout the course by means of 5 short in-course assignments, for which students will receive feedback to enable them to produce the portfolio of materials.

Feedback

Students will receive oral feedback following the in-course assignments and written feedback following the submission of the portfolio.
