This course will focus on how to critically read and reflect on TESOL research. Students will develop their ability to critically aranalyse an article’s structure and content. They will also develop their ability to read academic articles more effectively by analysing what information can be found in sections of a typical research article on TESOL. In the process of analysing research articles, students will be encouraged to develop and reflect on their beliefs about teaching pedagogy and how these beliefs relate to recent research findings.

They will also develop their ability to read academic articles more effectively by analysing what information can be found in sections of a typical research article on TESOL. In the process of analysing research articles, students will be encouraged to develop and reflect on their beliefs about teaching pedagogy and how these beliefs relate to recent research findings. Advantages and limitations of the research methods from TESOL articles selected for seminars will identified and discussed.
Course Aims
By the end of the course students will be able to:
• critically evaluate selected TESOL research articles with a view to identifying the strengths and weaknesses,
• develop an in-depth understanding of how TESOL research can inform their practice as language teachers,
• critically reflect on the potential applications of TESOL research findings in the language classroom context,
• relate the existing research on TESOL to their language learning experiences and teaching practice in the classroom,
• analyse how TESOL research findings relate to their beliefs about EFL teaching,
• learn how to reference sources and quotations in academic writing,
• develop their ability to find TESOL research articles in online databases.
