Course Overview

This course opens up new ways for students to think about language by introducing them to the fundamentals of English linguistics. Students will learn how to identify and analyse the major "building blocks" of language in phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. Examples for illustration and discussion will be drawn from varieties of English spoken in the British Isles and worldwide, with lectures and tutorials geared to providing students with an active vocabulary with which to discuss language, and essential tools with which to analyse its structure and function.

Course Description

This will be based on on your attendance (1 mark out of 22 for each tutorial attended) and the quality of your interaction with your peers during tutorials (up to 4 marks out of 22 for quality of participation). You will also be expected to submit feedback on the course as part of this mark (see below).

Weekly Course Feedback - We ask students to submit feedback for the course through an online form available each week. This should take no more than a few minutes to fill out, and is useful in helping us see what is going well and what we need to improve as the course progresses. You will receive 1 mark out of 22 towards your TAM each week you complete the form, up to 8 marks (so you can miss a couple of weeks). The link to the form will be available on the course Blackboard page.
