GL3525: FIELD & MAPPING TECHNIQUES 2 (2024-2025)

Last modified: 01 Nov 2024 14:16

Course Overview

This course teaches the advanced field skills necessary for all practising geologists, and serves as preparation for the summer mapping project (GL4023). The material builds on that covered in GL3026 (Field & Mapping Techniques 1). Preliminary laboratory classes in Semester 2 are used to prepare students for the field exercises on the 10-day field trip. The students will learn how to systematically collect, analyse and present their own field data as part of wider scientific studies.

Course Description

The course comprises 1) background laboratory classes and day field trip prior to embarking on residential field trip. 2) 10 days of residential field work undertaken during second half-session. It consists of advanced field observation, mapping, data recording and analysis of the stratigraphic, sedimentological, structural, and petrological characteristics of rocks in selected areas. Maps, sections, logs, graphs and field notebooks, together with posters of field syntheses and interpretations, are produced and developed during the course.

Course Aims:

  • Conduct independent fieldwork effectively and safely.
  • To provide training in a wide range of field techniques to collect and interpret geological and geophysical field data from igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks as well as accurately recording structural data from ductile and brittle deformation zones.
  • To provide a comprehensive set of field skills to allow confident undertaking of independent field mapping.
  • Reconstruct the structural and sedimentological history of the North West Highlands from first principles using field-based observations.
