FY3514: FOREST MEASUREMENT AND MONITORING (2015-2016)

Course Overview

  • This course focuses on two topics: the measurement of trees and forest stands, usually for forest management; and on the use of GIS (Geographic Information Systems).
  • Practical exercises in a local forest allow you to become confident in a range of forest measurement techniques.  These sessions are followed by computer classroom sessions where data gathered are analysed and discussed.
  • GIS practicals include both classroom sessions using existing forest datasets and also data gathering in the field using GPS (Global Positioning System) devices so you learn some of the practical skills used in modern forest (and other land use) management.

Course Description

This course is designed to give an understanding of the measurement of single trees and tree crops, forecasting of yield from thinnings and clear fells (including yield regulation), methods of inventory of forests, and the application of remote sensing in inventories. The application of geographical information systems (GIS) in forest planning.

This course runs in weeks 25-29, and is scheduled in Thread 2, so may have contact hours in any or all of these times:  Mondays, 14-18; Tuesday, all day; Friday, 14-18.  If this is an optional course, there may also be contact hours on Wednesdays, 9-11.

Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 30 August 2024 for 1st term courses and 20 December 2024 for 2nd term courses.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: 1 two-hour examination (80%) and submission of practical reports (20%). Resit: Similar to 1st attempt, with continuous assessment mark(s) and /or exam mark carried forward with an opportunity to resit either or both, depending on what was failed in the first attempt.

Formative Assessment

A strong emphasis will be made throughout the course on informal verbal feedback during practicals, field trips and discussions.

Feedback

Each student will receive individual feedback and a mark for each task. Feedback will be provided as written comments. Students who are identified as having difficulty in successfully completing the coursework assessment tasks will be invited to meet members of the course team to identify difficulties and discuss solutions.
