EV5518: CORE SKILLS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES (2023-2024)

Last modified: 05 Oct 2023 08:46

Course Overview

The course will provide the students with valuable skills required in developing their research and general study skills, essential for their progression during the MSc programme, as well as to the rest of their academic and professional careers. The course introduces basic statistical analysis, teaches data handling skills and exposes students to literature searching and reference styles. During the course, students will get experience in handling real-life, large data sets and will work together with the lecturer and demonstrators in analysing the data and presenting the results.

Course Description

The main aim of this course is to enable students coming from a range of backgrounds and studying environmental science, ecology, soil science and pollution the opportunity to enhance their core skills related to literature searches, critical reading of literature, processing data, statistical analysis of data, and to make the link between data collection and analysis, and interpreting statistical analysis to draw conclusions that address a research question.
Teaching includes group lectures, interactive online exercises, computer practicals, group discussions, field trips and directed self-study.

By the end of the course students should have:

  • conduct data exploration and determine an appropriate approach to data analysis;
  • analyse, interpret and present results from a variety of linear modelling analyses;
  • explain the strengths and weaknesses of different sampling and survey designs;
  • characterize robust and reproducible research practices that relate to sampling, hypothesis testing and statistical analysis;
  • interrogate and interpret experimental designs, approaches to statistical analysis and presentation of results in published papers by engaging effectively with peers in group-based activities;

Taught topics covered include:
(note that these may vary slightly between years)

Data handling
Descriptive Statistics
Writing and Critical analysis skills
Linear Models
Non-parametric analysis
Summarising and presenting results
