Course Description

The course enables students to develop a theoretical grounding in land remediation. Special attention is paid to historical contamination, which has been linked to pollution of soils and groundwater, as well as negative effects on human health and ecological receptors. This globally important topic is explored through a range of assessment and management approaches showcasing the best practice. Students will explore what constitutes contamination, factors that make contaminants available and harmful, as well as suitability of various remediation techniques. The issues are discussed in the context of differing environmental and regulatory parameters. The practical component of the course focuses on training students in key skills suited to a remediation officer that operates as part of a large company, consultancy or as a regulator.
