EG25G3: DESIGN AND COMPUTING IN ENGINEERING PRACTICE (2024-2025)

Course Overview

A variety of tools fundamental to product identification and design, such as requirement trees, fit-for-purpose quality graphs and morphological charts are used to explain various aspects of engineering design process. An exercise in reverse engineering will be undertaken to gain an appreciation of the development of existing designs and issues such as design protection, copyright and patents will be explained as part of this process. 

 

Material selection is included both from a viewpoint of quality, impact on environment and sustainability.  Practical aspects of the manufacturing process will be covered through lectures and hands-on experience of workshop practice.  More advanced use of SolidWorks will be covered culminating in the production of a set of 3rd angle engineering drawings from a provided written specification. This will require research through the internet or library sources in order to ascertain the necessary configuration and detail of the component part. The use of computing (MATLAB) as a pivotal aid to practical design and as computational analysis tool will be developed in preparation for further applications in later years of study.

 

The course is only available to students on the Graduate Apprenticeship in BEng in Civil Engineering.For these students the course will run over both the second half session and the summer months.  This is done as part of a spreading of the GA workload over the full calendar year rather than simply over the two half sessions ofthe normal teaching year.

Course Description

Engineering Design, Product Design

Principles of product specification and engineering design process and procedures.Product specifications within the confines of customer requirements, fit-for-purpose, quality and cost effective production. Conceptual design process, multicriteria design candidate assessment, design enhancement.

 

Ethics, Environment and Sustainability
This element of the course deals with environmental ethics and sustainability. It starts by looking at the essential resources provided by the earth such as fossil fuels, minerals, food and water; students are asked to consider whether or not we are likely to run out of anything. One natural resource is examined in more depth as a case study. Students are asked to consider whether economic growth will make things worse. Students will finish this element of the course by examining the subject of waste minimisation and recycling.

 

ComputerProgramming
Knowledge of MATLAB as engineering analysis tool is developed through lectures and practical sessions. Application of computer programming are exercised for a number of simple design problems with elements of parametric studies and basic optimisation.   

 

Solid Modelling
Introduction to Computer Aided Engineering CAE and Computer Aided Design CAD. Further development of solid modelling and engineering drawing skills through hands-on experience of using SolidWorks.  Extended design exercise involving the use of SolidWorks to produce precise and accurate drawings from written specification taking account of the limitations of the manufacturing process.

 

Information Skills
Students develop information skills that will support them through Levels 2-5 for assignments and dissertations, refresh Level 1 skills in relation to use of ebook collections, go beyond Google and Google Scholar to use more efficient and effective tools in support of academic work e.g. Scopus database, be reminded of the importance of correct citing/referencing and advised on useful reference management tools. Students will complete an individual exercise at the end of the workshop.

 

Engineering Practice
Hands-on exercises on the manufacture of simple parts using variety of machine tools and joining processes, welding, fabrication of an electrical circuit and surveying.These session will take place at the North East Scotland College (NESCol) – Altens Campus. Note that students are required to make their own travel arrangements to NESCol and ensure that they wear appropriate PPE clothing.
