The online course, Activities, Knowledge, and Values is designed to expand participants’ sense of contemporary issues and challenges in higher education. It addresses eight topical themes, which are delivered as synchronous interactive sessions in this core course for the PGCert in Higher Education Teaching & Learning programme. The course also includes an authentication of teaching practice activity, which builds upon the peer observation of teaching in the first PGCert course.

This course is offered online and is available across both Aberdeen and Qatar campuses, for University of Aberdeen staff currently employed in a significant role in higher education teaching or learning support. The course is a core component of the Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education Teaching & Learning programme, which is delivered by the Centre for Academic Development.
The course comprises of eight sessions, as outlined below. For each session, asynchronous learning activities precede the synchronous session in a ‘flipped classroom approach’.

A synchronous session that will enable participants to present a poster to course peers and the teaching team.
These eight sessions are underpinned by four formative assessments, two summative assessments, and include a mandatory observation of teaching practice.
The course is designed as a professional development option for educators keen to enhance their existing knowledge base and skills in teaching, learning, and assessment. It is fully aligned with the Professional Standards Framework for Teaching & Supporting Learning in Higher Education (PSF, 2023) and is delivered in partnership with the School of Education. Course materials and associated resources are delivered using the University’s virtual learning environment, MyAberdeen.

Word Count: 500 Participants are required to be observed in their teaching or learner support duties by an existing colleague with Advance HE Fellowship at FHEA or above. The observee submits a written reflective appraisal of their own teaching practice and written feedback is provided by the Course Co-ordinator and peer feedback from the observer. |
