Course Description

The course is a core component of the Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education Teaching & Learning programme, which is delivered by the Centre for Academic Development.

The course comprises of eight sessions, as outlined below. For each session, asynchronous learning activities precede the synchronous session in a ‘flipped classroom approach’.

  • Includes a reflective opening to this course, enabling reflection on learning from the first PGCert course, and to allow for insightful discussions from participants about their own professional development.

2: Value of Theories for Learning

  • Translating theory into practice.

3: Audience and Obstacles

  • A topical session addressing major issues in higher education, such as decolonising the curriculum.

4: Nurturing a Learning Community

  • What do we mean by a learning community? And how can higher education support people, staff, and students to help provide social connectedness, a sense of direction and belonging.

5: Concepts: Fit for Practice?

  • Does the conceptualisation of theorising academia work in practice?

6: Ethics

  • The importance of understanding ethics in an academic learning and teaching context.

7: Education for Sustainable Development

  • Underpinned by the Aberdeen 2040 Strategy, this session will explore how active, participative, and experiential learning methods can shape education for sustainable development.

8: Poster Presentation

A synchronous session that will enable participants to present a poster to course peers and the teaching team.

These eight sessions are underpinned by four formative assessments, two summative assessments, and include a mandatory observation of teaching practice.

The course is designed as a professional development option for educators keen to enhance their existing knowledge base and skills in teaching, learning, and assessment. It is fully aligned with the Professional Standards Framework for Teaching & Supporting Learning in Higher Education (PSF, 2023) and is delivered in partnership with the School of Education. Course materials and associated resources are delivered using the University’s virtual learning environment, MyAberdeen.
