Course Overview

This course builds on Professional Focus 1 enabling students to further explore an area of the curriculum, or an innovative perspective on learning. The course will enhance students’ own learning as well as stimulate new ideas to inform practice as a teacher. It is designed to model the creative and collaborative pedagogical approaches advocated in Curriculum for Excellence

Course Description

Options might include but not be limited to:
Globalisation - linking curriculum areas including history, geography, expressive arts, modern foreign languages with religious moral personal and social studies to develop students understanding of political and cultural literacy.
Exploring literacies in context - examining different perspectives on literacy including changing definitions, social history, the history of education, gender and current ideologies of literacy/literacies in policy and practice.
Future literacy - examining new literacy skills identified as digital, information or technological literacy with a focus on their possible impact on learning and teaching across the curriculum.
Musical literacy - introducing a range of methods and skills such as the Kodaly approach, creative composition and use of music across the curriculum.
Emotional literacy - examining appropriate pedagogy to support development of emotional literacy as part of understanding inclusive practice, exploring specific issues such as gender and race as well as specific needs such as autism and dyslexia.
Art as a tool for learning across the curriculum - using creativity as a cross-cutting theme to examine learning through the expressive arts and in communities to understand the concept of cultural literacy.

Learning through partnership; home, school and community.
The professional and policy context of education.
The history of education.
Thematic teaching through Storyline.
