Course Overview

This is the second of two immersive courses run on-campus to meet the professional standards for a counselling skills programme.  It comprises teaching on key issues in the delivery of embedded counselling, and practice skills development.

Course Description

During the second immersive Counselling Skills course, students will develop skills and knowledge including: 

  • Ability to understand the appropriate use of counselling skills within different settings
  • Clarity around the differences between the terms sex, sexuality and gender and an understanding of gender and sexual diversity therapy and  of the impact of sexuality and gender on a listening relationship 
  • Understanding of race and culture issues in a supporting relationship and convey the importance of being aware of the impact of culture on a listening relationship
  • Understanding of diversity and inclusion policies
  • Description different models of grief
  • Understanding of what is meant by addiction and demonstrate different ways of working with the issue of addiction
  • The different forms of abuse, the effects of adverse childhood experiences and develop a range of listening and responding skills related to working with trauma
  • Focus on the different ways of working with children and young people,
  • Understanding of the ethical issues involved in working with children and young people
  • A range of listening and responding skills and how these can be applied to working with children and young people (expressive methods in counselling)
  • The opportunity to demonstrate self-aware reflection on the course content and its impact on their development
  • The ability to self-reflect on practice
  • Safeguarding issues when using a counselling skills approach
  • The importance of continuous professional developmentand how to increase self-awareness and knowledge 
  • Group therapy and how this differs from support groups; group process and ways of working with groups
  • What burnout and compassion fatigue and the importance of self-care to prevent burnout
  • Understanding of technological support for mental health difficulties
  • What supervision is and its importance to a counselling approach
  • The relevance of research to the use of listening skills
  • Integration of learning from the counselling skills courses
