Course Overview

This online course is the fourth in the series of counselling skills and teaches students to understand and take forward their ability to offer embedded counselling in both the online and in-person environments.
Completion of this course provides evidence of the capacity to move on to therapist training if desired.

Course Description

During the Counselling Skills 4, students will develop skills and knowledge including:

  • Listening skills in the context of support rather than counselling and the difference between formal counselling and the use of listening skills
  • Safeguarding issues when using a counselling skills approach
  • The importance of continuous professional development
  • How to increase self-awareness and knowledge
  •  Group therapy and how this differs from support groups
  • Group process and ways of working with groups
  • What burnout and compassion fatigue are
  • The importance of self-care to prevent burnout
  • Ways participants can support themselves
  • Understanding of technological support for mental health difficulties
  • Different modes of delivering support
  • What supervision is and its importance to a counselling approach
  • The relevance of research to the use of listening skills
  • How to build self-reflection and self-awareness
    Integration of learning from the whole course
