CM5542: SYNTHETIC METHODS FOR PROCESS SCALE-UP AND DEVELOPMENT (2022-2023)

Last modified: 31 May 2022 13:24

Course Overview

This course builds upon the background provided in CM50XX Molecular design and synthesis, and introduces a range of advanced methods used in synthetic organic chemistry. The importance of environmental issues in designing chemical processes will be highlighted. The students will gain hands-on experience of these advanced methods of synthesis.

Course Description

Key synthetic strategies will be introduced such as modern coupling reactions, catalytic methods, click chemistry and peptide chemistry. Advanced protecting group chemistry will be discussed in relation to these methodologies. Green synthetic methodology will be emphasised throughout and environmental issues will be discussed and their importance considered in terms of drug production and waste remediation. The course will provide an introduction to reaction kinetics and heat evolution.
