This course will explore developments in religious beliefs and practices in the Celtic and Anglo-Saxon worlds (especially Scotland and Ireland) from 400 to 1200. Topics included will include some or all of the following: conversion to Christianity, saints and monasteries, the production of saints’ Lives and other texts, heresies real and alleged, Culdee works and teachings, apocryphal texts and prophecies, the influence of canon law, effects brought about by Vikings, and the wide-ranging reforms of the twelfth century.

This course will explore developments in, and the varied evidence for, religious beliefs and practices in the Celtic and Anglo-Saxon worlds from c. 400 to c. 1200. Topics included will include some or all of the following: conversion to Christianity, saints and monasteries, the production of saints’ Lives and other texts, heresies real and alleged, Culdee works and teachings, apocryphal texts and prophecies, the influence of canon law, effects brought about by Vikings, and the wide-ranging reforms of the twelfth century. The course will focus mainly on Scotland and Ireland but will have significant Germanic elements.
No prior knowledge of the mediaeval Celtic or Germanic worlds or their languages is assumed. Texts will be studied in translation. Any background in Irish Studies, Scottish Studies or mediaeval literature and/or history will be an advantage.
