BT5016: INTRODUCTION TO COMMERCIALISATION AND BIO-BUSINESS (2024-2025)

Last modified: 23 Jul 2024 11:09

Course Overview

This course aims to help anyone who would like to work for big biopharma, for a medium-sized biotech company, for a micro-startup, or to continue in research: success in almost any scientific job requires the ability to spot opportunities, to find solutions, AND then to act to make these into a reality. This course will help you to develop a 'prepared mind' such that when an opportunity does come your way, you are ready to seize it.

Course Description

The end-product for this course will be you delivering a 3-minute elevator pitch on YOUR idea. This course focusses on developing an entrepreneurial mindset rather than on becoming an entrepreneur (being an 'intrapreneur' or a 'technopreneur'). It assumes that you are a problem-solving scientist who wants to look beyond the science and think about how your ideas can be moved forward to benefit humanity. In this course, we will look at what it takes to be a problem-solver, at what steps you need to take right now to prepare yourself for success (networking and an ability to enthuse others about your ideas). We will look at the sorts of opportunities and ideas that you might consider, and how they could be developed, and then move forward to areas that you might not be aware of - but, without which, your idea can never become a reality (ethical considerations, marketing and intellectual property).
