The history of art history is often presented as a story of 'great men' and 'great ideas'. However, since the nineteenth century, the discipline was shaped decisively by female professionals who researched, published, and curated in various capacities. The course aims to uncover their contribution to the development of the discipline, with a special focus on the history of art history in Britain.

Art history in Britain was a profession shaped and driven by female scholars. This course aims to analyse and critically assess the work of Britain's female art history lecturers, museum curators, and other scholars, between c. 1850 and 1970. In doing so, the course assesses art historiography from an interdisciplinary perspective and within the broader institutional frameworks of British Higher Education. We will draw on a multi-method theoretical apparatus, including approaches from feminist art history, sociology of professions, and history of knowledge. The course incorporates extensive skills-based, vocational components, in particular training in independent archival research.

We plan to hold a fieldtrip to London, supported by the Paul Mellon Centre, to study the Centre’s archival collections. We estimate that this will amount to c. £85 p.p., which would cover the costs for overnight bus travel (Flixbus) and a one-night stay in a centrally located hostel.
