I'm Nwadiaso and I’m currently studying MSc Psychological Studies. You know how you’ve always been interested in something, but it just seemed like a faraway interest that might never pan out? That’s the relationship I have with Psychology. I have always been interested in the mind, mental health, how people process emotions and the eventual outpour of those emotions.

This is funny but every time I watched shows or films where a counsellor or therapist is involved, it made me want to study psychology even more because I wanted to be the one helping people navigate their thoughts and feelings. And now I am on my journey to achieving that which I think is amazing.

I’ve had this image of myself in Scotland and the University of Aberdeen was what I felt spoke to me the most so I applied and was accepted. Being accepted made me even surer that I had made the right choice.

I felt a connection to the University, it sounds corny I know, I can’t explain it though, the environment, the curriculum.

The best and current experience for me so far is access to tutors who you can book appointments with for advice regarding work opportunities and help with writing your CVs and other such things. I was having a hard time finding work that would gain me relevant experience in this field and after speaking to one such tutor who sent me about 10 links to organizations I could volunteer with. I applied and did the interview and thankfully was accepted. I will start my training as a Volunteer Counsellor in July and August. I know the experience I'll get from this would help me narrow down to what field of psychology I want to focus on.

I'd say the best part for me is the quiet of Aberdeen. It’s been wonderful meeting people from different spheres of the world. This is my first-time leaving Nigeria for a long time and to experience a different culture has been most rewarding. The faculty in University of Aberdeen is exceptionally sound and my class colleagues have been wonderful. It is a safe and wonderful place to be.

In terms of my experience outside academics, I love the beach and taking walks. I’ve never walked so much in my life but it’s been good for me!

Nwadiaso started the MSc Psychological Studies course in January 2021.
