After spontaneously deciding to study Psychology in Aberdeen last summer, it was a huge surprise to have received the Anderson Prize. I am honoured and grateful to the School of Psychology for this award.

Starting university in second year was nerve-wracking, to say the least. I felt that I would be miles behind everyone as they would be familiar with the course and its structure, each other and the university. However, I found everyone was very welcoming and friendly; my personal tutors and lecturers helped me settle in and adjust to university life and were always an email away. People on my course were really helpful and patient in answering my many questions — thank you!

Moving to Scotland, I was excited for a new beginning but anxious about being far from home. But I am glad I moved to Aberdeen. It was surprising to see just how diverse the city and university is. I have met and made friends with people from various backgrounds and have enjoyed learning about each other’s cultures.

My choice to study Psychology was mainly influenced by my intrigue about its relevance in our daily lives. This year, I have learnt just how broad it is and the different career paths I could follow. In third year, I am looking forward to gaining a deeper insight and furthering my knowledge in the various areas. As of now, I would like a career in Clinical Psychology, but I am keeping an open mind and I’m planning on getting an internship to have some hands-on experience.

Amina Aji is a 2nd year student studying for their BSc in Psychology.
