Biography

PhD Student, 2022 - 2025. Targeting eDNA surveillance for plant health pests and invasive alien species 

I am investigating the use of environmental DNA to detect crop pests and invasive terrestrial invertebrate species. The aim of this project is to improve biosecurity measures in agriculture, horticulture and forestry controlling invasive species and agricultural pests. My research is primarily based in Northern Ireland but the results will apply to international biosecurity measures.

Research Overview

I am currently investigating the use of environmental DNA for biosecurity relating to terrestrial invertebrates in Northern Ireland. My PhD project is assessing the potential for using this technique in surveillance and testing qPCR based methods for detecting flatworms (Arthurdendyus triangulatus) and herbivorous insects. Previous research experience includes work on insect genetics, harnessing insect communication for crop protection and biodiversity monitoring of insects, birds, and plants. I teach entomology and other ecology survey skills to volunteer wildlife monitoring groups.
