Biography
I started in 1981 and I started to learn laboratory skills, enzyme analysis and learning about microbiology, anaerobic culturing methods, doing batch and continuous culturing methods. I then went on to learn methylation analysis , gas chromatography, protein determination and total sugar determination.
I went on to develop skills in native and SDS acrylamide gels and zymogram analysis, reducing sugar enzyme assays, transformation and conjugal gene transfer, plasmid and genomic DNA extraction, DNA sequencing and analysis, plasmid cloning, lambda library screening, southern blots, radioactive hybridisation work and autoradiography.
I expanded my laboratory skills by learning T-Vector cloning, Category II containment work, reverse transcription, real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction(Q-pcr), RNA extraction, In vitro transcription, agarose gels, pulse field gel analysis, genome walking, PCR ligations, phage screening, gene expression and purification, Dionex, Fluorescent In-situ Hybridisation, Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis and fermentor systems. My role also now involves teaching and supervising all students and visiting workers involved with Principle Investigator techniques in the laboratory and associated computer packages.
I also took over as Area Safety Adviser and the Quality Assurance Representative during this time. I am also now the Lab Coordinator for the Microbiology Group.
