Biography
George Youngson was born in Glasgow, educated in Fife, graduated from Aberdeen University Medical School in 1973 and underwent surgical training in Aberdeen, Inverness, London Ontario, and Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada. He took the post of Consultant General Surgeon in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary in 1984 and Consultant Paediatric Surgeon at Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital in 1988 before retiring in 2010. A personal chair in paediatric surgery was awarded him by Aberdeen University in 1999. He was appointed as Emeritus Professor in 2010 and was made Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for services to Child Health in Scotland in June 2009.
He was previously Council member and Vice President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Previous appointments include Chairmanship of the Intercollegiate Specialty Examination Board in Paediatric Surgery UK, and co-chairman of the Managed Service Network for Children and Young People with Cancer in Scotland. His major interests are in surgical education, research into human factors related to surgical performance, and service configuration for children's specialist care. Currently, he serves on the board of the Scottish charity, - KidsOR, as a trustee and is chairman of its International Advisory Committee.
His past awards include the Keith and Shepherd Gold Medals (undergraduate awards in surgery) of the University of Aberdeen, Presidents' Medal of Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the Rahima Dawood Medal from College of Surgeons of East Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA) and the Denis Brown Gold Medal from the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons (BAPS).
George lives in Aberdeen and is married to Sandie - a local artist. They have 2 daughters, Kellie (New Zealand) and Louise (New York), one son, Calum (London) and 8 grandchildren.
