Eye of the greenfly - University technologist scoops award for striking image

An incredible 'under the microscope' image of a greenfly's eye, captured by a University of Aberdeen technologist, has won an award at the 2015 Wellcome Images Awards.

Kevin Mackenzie, who manages the Microscopy and Histology Core Facility at the University’s Institute of Medical Sciences, took the striking shot which was selected as one of 20 winning images showcasing the best in science imaging talent and techniques.

Following the success of the 2014 Wellcome Image Award exhibitions, held simultaneously at venues around the UK, this year’s winning images will be on display at even more locations, including Aberdeen Science Centre, Satrosphere.

Kevin is no stranger to the awards and this is the fourth time one of his images has been selected by the Wellcome Image Awards judging panel.

In addition to having his image displayed as part of the exhibition at Satrosphere, Kevin will deliver two public talks at the Science Centre as part of British Science Week's Discovery Day on Saturday, March 21.

Kevin, who will attend a special awards ceremony in London next week (March 18th), said: “I am delighted to have one of my images selected for these prestigious awards.

“Attending the ceremony is always a great experience. It’s an opportunity to meet the other finalists and to see their winning images – which are always amazing!

“Taking micrographs is part of my job, and I must have spent years capturing images but never doing anything with them, so it’s fantastic that they are now being displayed and shared for everyone to see.”

Catherine Draycott, Head of Wellcome Images and a member of the judging panel said: “This year’s selection of winning images is not only beautiful; they bring to life an incredible array of innovative imaging techniques, and hint at stories and ideas that go beyond the visual. We are thrilled that they will be displayed in so many venues, and look forward to seeing the range of exhibitions, as diverse as the images themselves.”
