The May festival sprung into life yesterday with packed audiences for Friday events - and much more to come today and tomorrow.
Festival-goers filled venues to hear poets Patrick Crotty and David Wheatley, watch Aberdeen Uni’s Got Talent, discover fresh creative talent at the New Writers event and consider the role of Gaelic in the Independence debate.
Friday came to a close with former Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess sharing tales from the band’s rollercoaster ride to success in Telling Stories.
Festival co-ordinator Jill Burnett said: “The May Festival got off to a fantastic start on Friday with a host of great events, packed venues and a wonderful atmosphere around campus. Even the sun shone through for us!
“We are looking forward to a great weekend with events from big name speakers, fun for all the family and a host of drop-in events. There is something in the programme for everyone, so come down to the King’s College Campus in Old Aberdeen to see the variety on offer.
“Our dedicated Children’s Festival runs throughout the weekend where all events are free, and many events in the main programme are free or low cost thanks to the support of our sponsors, Saudi Aramco, Marathon Oil and Talisman UK.”

Highlights for today (Saturday May 10) include:
- Journalist and author Tony Parsons sharing his brand new book Murder Bag with an audience for the first time.
- Cinema expert David Gritten talking about his experience interviewing legendary filmmakers and actors.
- David Bond sharing his hilarious work Project Wild Thing, which looks at how to get children into the outdoors.
- Scandinavian Singing and Circle Dancing
- A look at the poppies in contemporary war with international development expert Hilary Homans
- King’s College Shorts – award winning short films from new filmmakers
There are also drop-in events including a natural produce market.
The May festival will continue on Sunday with former BBC war correspondent Kate Adie, a debate on the referendum in Battle for Britain and a finale concert featuring the Red Hot Chilli Pipers.
