Aberdeen graduate first on new company scheme to fill logistics gap

A University of Aberdeen graduate has been given a chance to work across Europe thanks to a new graduate scheme at global logistics company Peterson SBS.

Peterson SBS introduced the graduate training programme to encourage more young people into the industry and 23-year-old Greg Skinner is the first person to take part in the scheme.

Greg, originally from Peterhead but who now lives in Aberdeen, graduated with an MA (Hons) in Management Studies from the University of Aberdeen and has taken on the role of graduate trainee manager within the firm. As part of his role he spends three months in each area of the business from managing quayside operations at Peterson SBS’ Aberdeen Harbour base to demonstrating a new cargo monitoring systems in The Netherlands.

Mike Porter, chief operating officer, said: “The logistics sector is facing a shortage of young talent and by creating a graduate training programme we want to encourage more young people into the industry. Logistics doesn’t solely focus on forklifts and trucks, we deal with air and sea freight on a global level. It is an energetic and fast moving industry and by encouraging new talent into the field we can help keep ideas fresh and innovative.

“This programme lets graduates get hands on experience from the start- allowing them to work in offices not only across the UK but in Europe too. This will help give them the best possible start to their career and allow us to have continuity of staff in the future."

After completing his training Greg aims to continue working within Peterson SBS.

He said: “The graduate scheme will be a huge benefit to my career as I am being given exposure to more than just one area of the business, unlike many other graduate programmes in the UK. Since day one I have been involved with tasks from improving current processes to getting hands on, completing my fork lift training.

“I have also been involved in developing Peterson SBS’ bespoke quayside cargo management system, e-Cargo. I was able to successfully implement the system in Aberdeen and I am now traveling around the other areas of the company beginning the development and implementation process again.”
