A senior group from SINOPEC (China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation) have attended a Continued Professional Development training programme on the topic of advanced drilling, at the University of Aberdeen.
The group comprised technical directors and chief engineers of various regional subsidiaries of the company from across China.
The training programme – which took place from 2 – 20 September - was developed with input from the industry, including Shell, Schlumberger, MI Swaco, Senergy, Champion, Lloyds, Stena Drilling and First Marine Solutions.
The group had the opportunity to visit a number of local oil and gas companies and gain an insight into the latest knowledge and technology in the field of offshore advanced drilling.
The group were welcomed to the institution by Professor Albert Rodger, Vice-Principal and Head of the College of Physical Sciences at the University of Aberdeen at an event at the Old Town House.
Professor Rodger highlighted the close link between the University and industry in the areas of research, teaching and training, and the strategic importance of involvement with China’s for its rapid development in his opening speech.
Dr Bin Wang, from the University of Aberdeen’s School of Engineering coordinated the training programme.
He said: “Providing an integration of presentations and site tours, the training programme was designed to enhance participants’ knowledge on new technologies and practices in the field of advanced drilling, and to learn and understand the organisation, technical principles and approaches of world-leading companies based on the North Sea experience.
“This programme helps to expose participants at the international level for business leads and technical networks. Particular attention has been paid to emerging challenges and potential opportunities which may impact on the business development of SINOPEC in the medium to long term.
“The University will continue to provide training programmes for SINOPEC in the future.”
The training programme was supported by the University’s Continued Professional Development unit.
Fred Stevenson-Robb, Director of Research and Innovation at the University of Aberdeen, presented the programme participants with certificates on completion of the course.
