Transport experts at the University of Aberdeen will host a workshop next week (Monday 23 March) focusing on measures to encourage the public to choose more sustainable travel options.
Schemes to promote cost effective and environmentally efficient transport will come under the spotlight at the event – entitled Travel Demand Management: an on-going challenge - hosted by the University's Centre for Transport Research and sponsored by the National Telford Institute.
Aimed at academics, industry representatives and members of the public with an interest in current transport issues, the workshop is free to attend.
Key topics to be examined include the Scottish Government's Smarter Choices, Smarter Places programme – a £15 million initiative launched by Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson in August 2008, to create innovative transport measures in Scotland's towns and cities.
Ian Maxwell, the Scottish Government's programme manager for the scheme, which has been rolled out to participating towns including Dundee and areas of Glasgow, will be one of the high profile transport experts presenting at the workshop in Aberdeen.
Experts from the University's Centre for Transport Research are collaborating in a study to assess how successful Smarter Choices, Smarter Places has been in meeting its aims to save people money, improve their health, build stronger communities, and improve the environment.
Derek Halden of DHC Ltd and Honorary Fellow in Transport at the University will also address the issue of how practitioners can justify the case for investment in smarter choices, at the workshop.
Other internationally leading transport experts presenting during the course of the workshop include Professor Gerd Sammer, Director of the Institute for Transport Studies at the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna, and Professor Michael Bell from the Centre for Transport Studies at the Imperial College, London.
The Travel Demand Management: an on-going challenge workshop will take place from 10.30am – 3.30pm on Monday 23 March in the Fraser Noble building on the University of Aberdeen's King's College Campus.
Those wishing to attend must register in advance either by visiting http://www.abdn.ac.uk/ctr/ or by phoning Dr Paulus Aditjandra on 01224 272370.
The workshop is supported by Strathclyde and Napier universities.
