Old Bailey beckons for Syed in final of national competition

Law School student Syed Adil has made it to the final of a national advocacy competition.

Hosted by leading criminal law Barristers' Chamber, 6KBW College Hill, the competition is open to any final year student or graduate interested in pursuing a career at the Criminal Bar.

Syed is currently studying dual degrees in Scots and English Law, with European Legal Studies. He hopes to further pursue a Masters degree and be called to the Scottish and English Bar, developing a career as a cross-border Barrister and utilising his dual-qualifying degree to its full extent.

After qualifying for the first round, Syed had to prosecute in a Crown Court sentencing hearing, with his performance judged by a Members of Chambers.

For the final, Syed will be prosecuting a Crown Court trial which will take place at the Old Bailey in front of a Circuit Judge and jury, which will involve cross-examining a live witness.

”I took part in this competition to develop my advocacy abilities further and gain experience in prosecuting a trial in front of a jury,” he said.

“Going from reading about criminal trials in my first year of studying law at Aberdeen, to now competing in one at the Old Bailey in my final year, is incredibly exciting! As one of only four finalists, and the only undergraduate, I hope this experience will give me a taste of what my future career might hold for me.”

The final takes place at the Old Bailey on December 6.
