A pioneering brass ensemble with an international reputation for innovative programming and outstanding performances are to host a masterclass with workshops for local musicians and play a free recital for schoolchildren when they visit the University of Aberdeen early next month.
The Wallace Collection, founded by virtuoso trumpet player John Wallace to explore and perform the extensive brass repertory, open their short residency in the city on Friday 6 February with a free lunchtime recital in Elphinstone Hall.
Lucky primary schoolchildren in the Tarves and Fyvie area will have the opportunity to speak to the ensemble and learn more about the skills demanded of the top brass after a special concert later the same day in the Barthol Chapel.
The Wallace Collection’s residency in Aberdeen, sponsored by the George Craig Group, is a home-coming for one of the ensemble. Tuba player, Robin Haggart was born in the city and studied at the University. He combines his work with The Wallace Collection with his role as Principal Tuba for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
Local musicians can benefit from the players expertise at an informal masterclass and workshops hosted the Wallace Collection at 2pm in the Mitchell Hall. Places, costing £2.50, can be booked in advance by phoning University Music on 272570.
The premier event of The Wallace Collection’s visit will be at 3pm on Sunday 8 February with a concert in the Mitchell Hall. The programme is a reflection of the ensemble’s very wide repertoire featuring music by Francois Couperin, John Tavener’s Trisagion, Sousa’s ever popular marches and the Beach Boys for brass. Tickets are £5 from the Aberdeen Box Office in Union Street.
