University of Aberdeen Careers Fair 1999

Companies and organisations from throughout the UK will be represented at the University of Aberdeen’s annual Careers Fair, which takes place next week.

Representatives from more than 50 of the country’s leading financial, technical, industrial, teaching and professional organisations will be on hand to offer information and advice to students of all years from higher education institutions throughout the city.

The event, organised by the University’s Careers and Appointments Service, will take place in Elphinstone Hall on Tuesday, November 2. It will be opened at 10.30am by the Principal of the University of Aberdeen, Professor C Duncan Rice, and will close at 3.30pm.

Kate Levin, Careers and Appointments Officer, said the Fair will provide significant opportunities, both for those students of all years who are looking for ideas and suggestions, as well as those who want direct contact with a specific company.

The financial sector will be represented by Abbey Life, Bank of Scotland, KPMG, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Arthur Anderson, Scottish Amicable and Standard Life, while technical advice will be offered by companies including EDS, Logica, Pragma, BT, Wood Group, Engineering and SAIC.

Information on teaching options will be provided by Northern College, Basil Paterson College, Edinburgh, and the Scottish Executive Education Department. The public sector will also be represented by the Scottish Executive, who will give advice on opportunities in the Civil Service, the Government Statistical Service and Aberdeen City Council (Social Work).

Texaco, Western Geophysical and Baker Hughes Inteq will be provide information on graduate recruitment within the oil industry and related services.

The food, drink, tobacco and retail industries will be represented by McDonalds Restaurants, Asda and The Majestic Wine Warehouse, while a range of employers from other industrial sectors, such as Marine Harvest McConnell, The Armed Services and Grampian Fire Brigade, will also be in attendance.

Profession bodies and organisations offering advice and information on broad areas of interest such as accountancy, health and safety, self-employment and chartered surveying will also be available. In addition, postgraduate officers from the University of Aberdeen and The Robert Gordon University will be on hand to discuss postgraduate study opportunities.

For those interested in the Voluntary Sector and Overseas Work, a number of organisations will be attending including Aberdeen Cyrenians, Frontier, Health Projects Abroad and VSO.
