An outstanding engineering student at the University of Aberdeen has been awarded a prestigious award for her work in the Department.
Lorna Campbell (29) was the winner of the Society for Underwater Technology’s annual Tom Patten Award, which is made to the most outstanding final year student supported by the Society. The award is made from a short-list of final year students by an assessment panel from both academia and industry.
Lorna, a former pupil of St Margaret’s School in Edinburgh, has been supported by the Society since her second year. She will receive an additional £3,500 for winning the award, on top of her annual award of £2,000.
“I have already got a degree from Aberdeen University in psychology, so I decided to apply to the Society for funding in second year as I have had to pay my own way through my engineering course,” she said.
“I was very surprised, but absolutely delighted, to have won. The support I have received from the Engineering Department over the past few years has been tremendous and I’m hoping to stay on to do research after my graduation next year.”
Professor Albert Rodger, Head of the Engineering Department, said: “We are all very proud indeed of this achievement by Lorna. She has already been awarded the Greenhorne Memorial Prize and the Norman Levy Prize by the University. The Tom Patten Award is a very significant distinction and a further indication of her exceptional progress in her undergraduate studies in Engineering. Lorna has combined excellence in academic achievement with an outstanding contribution to the wider corporate life of the Department.”
Paula Clatworthy, of SUT, said: “Lorna’s report was exceptional and she was the unanimous choice of the panel as an outstanding student who could also be expected to do extremely well in her chosen field.”
The Tom Patten Award was introduced in 1997 by the Society’s Support Fund Committee as the Gold Award for the most outstanding final year undergraduate student. The name was changed in 1999, in memory of Tom Patten, a former SUT President.
