Career advice for Aberdeen students

Upwards of 1000 students will attend the University of Aberdeen's annual Careers Information Fair tomorrow (Thursday, October 28), to meet employers face to face and find out more about future employment and study opportunities.

More than 40 employers from a variety of different sectors will be represented at the event, which is open to students of all years, but is particularly targeted towards third and fourth-year students, as well as postgraduate students and graduates from the University of Aberdeen .

A strong emphasis will be placed this year on engineering and finance with key employers including Shell, AMEC, Baker Hughes Inteq, Pricewaterhouse Coopers LLP and Deloitte, being represented at the event.

For students looking to gain access into the military or the police force, representatives from the Royal Navy, The Army, the Royal Air Force, and Grampian Police will all be in attendance.

Also present at the Careers Fair will be the Federation of Small Businesses and the Scottish Institute for Enterprise who will be providing information and advice on self-employment and new business start-ups.

Information on gap-year opportunities will be available from organisations such as Link Overseas Exchange, the International Voluntary Service Scotland and World Exchange.

Regina Styles, Careers Adviser with the University of Aberdeen 's Careers and Appointments Service, and event organiser is expecting a good turn out at the event.

She said: "This is an important event for all students and graduates planning their career and we are delighted with the range of exhibitors – from major international companies to smaller Scottish employers and representatives from local government – who will be on hand to provide information and advice.

Locker Madden, Head of the Careers and Appointments Service, said: "This is a wonderful opportunity for students to meet potential employers face-to-face and to explore a wide range of career opportunities; many of our employers recruit graduates from all disciplines. I am really grateful to the stand-holders for taking such a personal professional interest in our students."

The University of Aberdeen Careers Information Fair takes place at the Elphinstone Hall, King's College, University of Aberdeen, between 11am and 3.30pm. Entrance is free. Further information is available by visiting www.abdn.ac.uk/careers.
