Thousands of people are due to descend on the University of Aberdeen later this month for one of its biggest events – the annual Open Day.
Organisers say that they are anticipating upwards of 5,000 potential students and their parents to visit the King's College campus on Tuesday, August 28.
Bookings for the 8th annual Open Day have been received from throughout the UK and across the world, including Jordan, Germany, and Nigeria.
"The Open Day is one of the most important events on the University calendar and continues to attract thousands of people to Aberdeen each year," said Lesley McLennan, the University's Open Day Co-ordinator. "Last year's event was a great success and we're hoping to welcome even greater numbers to Old Aberdeen on August 28."
The event is aimed mainly at those interested in coming to study at Aberdeen in September 2008 but late applicants for 2007 entry, as well as people of all ages interested in studying at the University, are also welcome.
Visitors will be able to enjoy a packed programme of subject presentations on everything from Accountancy and Finance to Zoology, as well as a range of other general talks and exhibitions on issues such as accommodation, careers and student finance.
Live music will also take place across campus throughout the day, while The Hub will play host to two local Aberdeen bands in an event sponsored by The Tunnels, one of the Granite City's top music venues.
Included will be an acoustic set from Steven Milne, lead singer with The Little Kicks, who played the unsigned bands' stage at T in the Park earlier this summer.
Discounted open top bus tours of the city will also leave regularly from the bus stop across from King's College to give prospective students a feel of the city. Meanwhile, current students from the University's Drama Societies, fresh from appearing at the Edinburgh Fringe, will be performing one-act plays in the amphitheatre behind Taylor Building.
Other highlights include a sneak preview of the brand new Aberdeen Radio Station (ASR) and a chance to win a digital camera by entering the Open Day Photo Competition. Two professional photographers will judge the best snap of the day's proceedings.
A Global Challenges 'Question Time'-style event is also scheduled to take place at King's College Centre at 12noon. Visitors will be able to post their questions about issues such as global warming, pollution and third world poverty in a special post box, with a prize worth £25 awarded for each question selected and put to the panel of Professors.
Meanwhile, anyone getting peckish can head for Zeste, the University café off the High Street, where a barbeque will be held on the lawn from 2-4pm. Other snacks will be available throughout the campus.
A party has also been organised at the Student Union in the evening, with visitors given the opportunity to get a taste of real student life by spending the night at Halls of Residence.
Added Lesley, "There's guaranteed to be a real buzz on campus at the Open Day, which is why we're urging anyone who hasn't yet booked their place to visit our website and get registered. Aberdeen is a wonderful city to live in, and a tremendous place to come and study – it's not worth missing out on a chance to find out more."
