University Music joins BBC’s Bach Christmas celebrations

Music for the festive season continues at the University of Aberdeen this weekend when a special Christmas performance is held in King’s College Chapel, featuring works by J.S Bach.

The performance on Sunday afternoon (December 18) will link up with the BBC Radio 3 series ‘A Bach Christmas’, which is broadcasting the complete works of Johann Sebastian Bach, from today (Friday) until Christmas Day.

As part of the Bach at Christmas series, the BBC, in partnership with the Royal College of Organists (RCO), is organising an ambitious nationwide celebration of the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor.

The University of Aberdeen will join in the celebrations by holding its Christmas organ recital at 2.30pm on Sunday. As well as the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, the musical line-up will include noels old and new from France and other Christmas music.

Dr Roger B Williams, Director of University Music, said: “I am delighted to be taking part in a performance that links up with BBC Radio 3’s ‘A Bach Christmas’ series.

“It’s a real honour for Aberdeen to be part of this national celebration, which will be all the more special with the performance on the University’s recently acquired and magnificent Aubertin organ.”

Admission to the recital is free and there will be a collection for the charity, UCAN. Urological CANcers are among the most common cancers. They include cancers of the prostate, bladder, kidney, and testis.

Urological cancers make up one in three cancers in men and one in five of all cancers in men and women. 50,000 urological cancers are diagnosed every year in the UK and over 18,000 people in the UK die every year of urological cancer. In Grampian, over 5,000 people are referred every year with a suspected urological cancer.

The money raised by UCAN will fund a new urological research centre of excellence in Aberdeen that will make a difference to urological cancer patients and their families.

The campaign is spearheaded by University of Aberdeen Senior Lecturer James N'Dow (Senior Lecturer & Consultant Urological Surgeon) and Sam McClinton (Consultant Urological Surgeon).

Sunday’s Christmas recital will be held in King’s College Chapel at 2.30pm and is open to all. Further information is available by contacting University Music on (01224) 272570.
