The University of Aberdeen's CPD & Event Services team has organised four events set to take place over the next two weeks, bringing leading experts and academics from around the world to the city.
These events will provide a platform for cutting-edge research, collaboration, and innovation across various scientific fields.
The events taking place are:
International Association of Sedimentologists (IAS) 2024 Conference

Date: 25 – 27 June 2024
Symposium Chair: Dr Alex Brasier, University of Aberdeen
Overview: The IAS 2024 Conference in Aberdeen will bring together an international audience of over 550 delegates with interests in sedimentology, with the conference theme “Adapting to a Changing World”. The conference will feature four keynote speakers, oral and poster presentations, pre-conference workshops and field trips, along with a vibrant social programme.
10th International Symposium on Environmental Hydraulics 2024 (ISEH)
Date: 25 - 27 June 2024
Venue: University of Aberdeen, Old Aberdeen Campus, Aberdeen, Scotland
Symposium Chair: Dr Dominic van der A, University of Aberdeen
Overview: Organised by the University of Aberdeen and the IAHR Technical Committee on Fluid Mechanics of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR), the 10th ISEH will build on the success of previous symposia by bringing together more than 150 international experts to present and discuss new research, technical innovations, and case studies related to the symposium’s theme “Environmental Hydraulics for a Sustainable and Resilient Future.”
The conference, hosted by The Fluid Mechanics Research Group at the University of Aberdeen, will feature three keynote speeches delivered by leading figures in the field, complemented by technical tours, workshops, masterclasses, and specialised sessions.
This is the first time the symposium will have been held in the UK, and the first time in Europe since the 6th ISEH in Athens in 2010.
British Society for Neuroendocrinology (BSN) Annual Meeting

Overview: The 2024 BSN Annual Meeting in Aberdeen will highlight the latest neuroendocrinology research, with a strong focus on early-career researchers. The event will facilitate valuable discussions and networking opportunities for participants, who will also have the chance to extend their trip by starting with the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS) Forum 2024 in Vienna and then attending the BSN Annual Meeting in Aberdeen.
IUTAM Symposium on Frontiers of Solid Mechanics for Energy Transition

Overview: The IUTAM symposium gathers top researchers to discuss the latest advancements in solid mechanics and its applications in energy transition. Participants will explore innovative solutions and methodologies shaping the future of this crucial scientific discipline.

With support from partners, venues and suppliers such as VisitAberdeenshire, P&J Live, Stagecoach and First Bus and Aberdeen City Council attendees will learn about the latest developments in their fields as well as getting a taste of Scottish hospitality.
“It is a huge undertaking to bring a conference to a city and CPD and Events Services at the University, along with academic colleagues, have gone above and beyond to ensure attendees from across the globe enjoy their time in Aberdeen.”
Dr Alex Brasier from the University who is chairing the IAS conference added: “Around 550 scientists will gather from all across the planet for the annual meeting of the International Association of Sedimentologists. They are geologists who use sedimentary rocks to tell us how the planet has changed through time, and to help find solutions to big environmental challenges like CO2 storage for the energy transition. We will be discussing all aspects of the subject, from glacial processes to geothermal energy, and from the processes that form deep sea canyons to the processes that fossilised footprints of the ancestors of dinosaurs in desert dunes that were around modern-day Elgin some 250 million years ago. Seven workshops are being run in association with local and regional companies, teaching sedimentologists how to use the latest technology, and showcasing rock cores that tell the story of the geological history of the North Sea. Scotland is an excellent place for a meeting of sedimentologists as we have rocks that span all ages of the planet, so we have seven fieldtrips that are taking our international colleagues around the country to see some of the best rocks (and most beautiful locations, and most welcoming people) in the world.
