Professor John Watson from the University of Aberdeen has been elected the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society (OES) Vice President for OCEANS conferences.
The prestigious OCEANS series of conferences is recognised as the premier forum for the international marine community to meet and discuss topical issues affecting their work.
In this role he will be responsible for overseeing the formation and operation of all future OCEANS conferences in locations including Marseille and Seattle (in 2019), and Singapore and Biloxi (in 2020) and beyond.
Professor Watson said: “I am delighted that the OES Administrative Committee has elected me to be their next VP OCEANS. Organising the conferences in Aberdeen was hard work – but very rewarding and I am looking forward to sharing the benefit of my experience with the community worldwide.
“The OCEANS Conference takes place twice annually; once in North America (in autumn) and once in the Rest of the World (in spring). In the 2017 Aberdeen event, we established a Local Organising Committee with a varied group of academics from the University of Aberdeen and RGU, and oceanic engineering Industry Representatives. The University of Aberdeen’s CPD Services provided valuable and efficient support as the Professional Conference Organisers.
“Through my involvement with these conferences and the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society since 2003, I have been able to significantly expand my network of international and local contacts and this has resulted in research opportunities and projects with partners in Japan and Portugal.”
