University of Aberdeen named as top 40 UK university

The University of Aberdeen has been included among the top 40 UK universities listed in this year's Guardian University Guide, rising five places on last year's position.

Among the subject areas where the University has been included in the Guide’s UK top ten are General Engineering (8th), Medicine (7th) and Anthropology (5th).  The University was named as best in Scotland for General Engineering and Anthropology, and second for Medicine and Philosophy.

Subject areas to have made it into the UK top 20 include Law and Sociology (both 13th), and Philosophy (12th). Biosciences narrowly missed out on top 20 status, coming in at 21st.

In total, the University was listed in 17 top 40 subject areas in the UK, and 17 subject areas were listed in the top five in Scotland.

Across all subject areas the University scored highly on teaching satisfaction at 86.6%, while 84.8% of students said they were satisfied with their course.  The University also scored highly on graduate employment with 76.8% of graduates having a career within six months of leaving.

Commenting on the University’s performance in the Guide, University of Aberdeen Principal, Professor Sir Ian Diamond, said:

“I am delighted that the University has risen five places to be included in the list of top 40 UK universities in this year’s Guardian University Guide.

“In total 17 subject areas made it into the top 40, including three in the top ten, and 17 of our subject areas made it into the top five in Scotland.  This is an impressive achievement that is testament to the quality of our teaching and research in these areas.

“I am also pleased with the levels of student satisfaction and graduate employment highlighted in the Guide, which reflects our commitment to deliver an exceptional educational experience that enriches the lives of our students and enables them to realise their potential.”
