Data storage upgrade and migration of data

Data storage upgrade and migration of data

Planned upgrade to new data storage infrastructure.

What is happening?

The University is upgrading its data storage infrastructure. We will soon begin migrating your data (for example, H drives, shared drives, and network services such as the university web pages) from existing servers to the new system.

How will this affect you?

The migration process will take several weeks, although disruption to you will be minimal as work will take place outside of regular working hours.

You do not have to do anything during this process.  We will let you know in advance when your data is scheduled to be migrated and will keep you informed at every step, as detailed below.

Timetable for data migration

The timetable below is provisional and will be confirmed at the beginning of each migration week:

Before Migration day

  • We will advise you directly by email each week which data is to be migrated. This email will provide information about how the process may affect you.

On Migration day

  • We will begin to migrate your data onto the new storage system out of working hours on the migration day.  The data will be inaccessible for a couple of hours during the evening.
  • You will be unable to access your data during migration and there will be interruptions to some network services.

After Migration

You should experience no disruption after migration. You should however check your data as soon as possible after migration and report any issues directly to the Service Desk.

You’ll find further information on the project webpage – www.abdn.ac.uk/it/projects/current/data-storage.
