History Graduates Awarded Prestigious Fellowships

Two graduates who gained their PhDs from the History Department have been awarded prestigious fellowships at the Institute of Historical Research in London.

Dr Mindaugas Šapoka, who wrote his thesis on “The Genesis of the 1715 Vilnius Confederation of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in 1710-1715”, was awarded his PhD in February 2015. He then received a postdoc Junior Fellowship from the Jacobite Studies Trust at the Institute for Historical Research in London for the research project Poland-Lithuania and Jacobitism c. 1714 – c. 1750. Dr Ben Thomas, who completed his PhD in History at Aberdeen in 2014 with  a thesis under the title “Cultures of Empire in the Scottish Highlands, c. 1876 and 1902”, now holds the Alan Pearsall Fellowship at the Institute of Historical Research in London on a research project on The Royal Naval Reserve in rural Scotland and Wales, c. 1900-1939.
