True North Conference: Re-writing history Call for Submissions

Timespan's annual True North Conference invites submissions on the subject of re-writing history that reflects the cultural values we inscribe on the past, the processes and methodologies of writing history and the question of context and selection. International contributions are welcome. Closing date 3 January 2016.

Over the last few years their programme was concerned with the concept of North and they investigated our identity, what remoteness means to us and how we are connected in the past, present and future. They want to pause for a moment to discuss and share the means of how stories can be told.

The True North conference is for everyone: it is for artists, historians, academics, curators, or researchers; for those with an interest in thinking about the past or dreaming about the future.  It will be held from 18-19 March 2016 at Timespan, Helmsdale, Scotland, United Kingdom.

Types of presentation:

  • 5 min presentation. Submit an outline of a project or topic relevant to the theme of the conference of up to 200 words alongside a short biography of up to 100 words. Free conference ticket.
  • 20 min presentation. Submit an abstract of up to 750 words alongside a short biography of up to 200 words. Free conference ticket + fee of £75 + travel and accommodation.
  • 45 min workshop. Submit a proposal of up to 500 words alongside a biography of up to 200 words. Workshops may take place within Timespan or in the village. Free conference ticket + fee of £100 + travel and accommodation.
  • Installation / performance. Submit a brief proposal outlining your idea for the conference of up to 750 words alongside a brief biography of up to 200 words. Your idea can be an existing or new piece of work that you consider suitable for the context of the conference. In your application, please include three examples of your work as weblinks, video, image or text. Please indicate if you require any equipment, and submit a budget outlining any additional costs. Free conference ticket + fee of £150 + travel and accommodation.

Your proposal might address questions such as:

  • What does re-writing History mean in a Northern context?
  • How do we want to write history for the future?
  • What creative means can we employ to evaluate and renew methodologies of writing history?
  • In what ways is myth making and storytelling part of writing histories?
  • Histories, History and history - what definitions are relevant today?

Please email your application (including the category you are applying for in the subject of your email) to Anna Vermehren director@timespan.org.uk
