Aberdeen composers and sound artists to visit Orkney to perform at an international art festival

Aberdeen composers and sound artists will visit Papay Westray early in February this year to perform at Papay Gyro Nights 2015 Art Festival.

Dr Suk-Jun Kim will travel with other Aberdeen sound artists to Papay Westray to perform at Papay Gyro Nights 2015 Art Festival from 4 to 7 February this year. The Night of Gyros is an ancient festival of the island Papa Westray (Papay) in Orkney, which is celebrated on the first full moon of February.

Gyro is a mythical, child-eating giantess also known as Gygr, Gryla, Grylur, Grøleks, or Skeklers in other Nordic countries' folklore. The tradition was abandoned about 100 years ago, but since 2011 The Night of Gyros has returned as an eight days long celebration of video and sound art, experimental film and music and architecture, taking over fields, rocks, old farm buildings, workshops and ruins of the island.

Dr Kim will also play work by Luca Nasciuti, a PhD student in Composition, and will be joined by other Aberdeen sound artists from sonADA (Sonic Arts Days in Aberdeen), a sonic arts festival co-founded by Dr Kim and Francesco Sani from North East Scotland College last year.
