“The Impact of Migration on Regional Inequality”
In Great Britain, regional inequalities are widely acknowledged to be large. In Classical economic theory, labour responds to inter-regional disparities in economic opportunities by undertaking regional migration, which acts to reduce these disparities. Regional migration is therefore one of the primary mechanisms through which regional convergence is predicted to take place, and is traditionally viewed in the literature as an important labour market adjustment mechanism.
Currently there exists two distinct literatures on regional migration and regional wage inequality; however, very little attention has been focused on the relationship between the two. This PhD project will fill an important gap in both the migration and inequality literatures by investigating the mechanisms through which migration will influence regional wage inequality. This research will add important value added to existing knowledge, and will significantly contribute to the ongoing debate regarding the effect of regional migration on regional economic outcomes, in particular, the role of regional migration as an important labour market adjustment mechanism.
Students with an interest in labour or regional economics, and who have a strong empirical economic background, are encouraged to apply. Applicants are expected to have an Upper Second or First Class undergraduate degree in Economics, and must have completed an MSc in Economics or a related discipline.
