Award for Helen’s ‘outstanding’ thesis

MSc student Helen Gestwicki has won the Alpro Foundation Award for Masters - given in recognition of an outstanding thesis regarding food and nutrition and its impact on human health and the environment.

Helen’s MSc in Molecular Nutrition was jointly supervised by Dr Janice Drew and Dr Nigel Hoggard last year.

Her award-winning thesis was titled ‘The Effect of Bilberry Polyphenols on Adipose Tissue’.

The award was presented to Helen at the Nutrition Society Scottish Section meeting in Edinburgh by Professor Tom Sanders, Head of Diabetes & Nutritional Sciences Division, King's College London.

Meanwhile volunteers are needed for a follow-up study to the one that involved Helen. The new study is looking at the link between blaeberries and health and researchers are currently trying to recruit volunteers who fit the following categories:

• overweight men

• overweight, post-menopausal women

• diabetics (type 2) - controlled by diet alone

Volunteers would be given a blaeberry extract and a control capsule over two three-week periods and also have five visits to the University
