A highly prestigious scientific event will take place in Scotland for the first time from tomorrow (Tuesday July 27).
The University of Aberdeen will host the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) Symposium on Nonlinear Dynamics for Advanced Technologies and Engineering Design.
IUTAM is the leading international organisation which directs research in applied mathematics, physics and engineering.
World renowned experts in science and engineering from across the globe – including Asia, Australia, Europe and Americas - will gather at the University for the event, which will examine the latest developments that are paving the way for more effective, accurate and durable technologies and designs.
How a highly exciting field of academic research - nonlinear dynamics and chaos – is impacting in a wide range of areas including oil drilling, architecture and even climate change will be the focus of the four-day symposium.
Professor Marian Wiercigroch, Sixth Century Chair in Applied Dynamics at the University will chair the event.
He said: “The IUTAM symposium is a highly prestigious event which brings together some of the greatest minds in the field of science and engineering from across the globe.
“To host this internationally important event at the University of Aberdeen, and to bring it to Scotland for the first time, further establishes the institution’s leading position in the area of nonlinear dynamics.
“The main aim of the meeting is to stimulate engineering science research to develop the technology for new generation products and processes which could lead to more effective, sensitive, accurate, and durable operations for the engineering industry than those which are currently available.”
Professor Ian Diamond, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Aberdeen will open the event.
Professor Diamond said: “The University of Aberdeen is conducting leading and cutting-edge research in the area of nonlinear dynamics.
“This research has the potential to revolutionise the future of the engineering sector and ultimately deliver practical and innovative applications which could impact on many areas of everyday life.
“Attracting the IUTAM symposium, an event which is globally recognised as a prestigious and important scientific gathering, to the University affirms our leadership and commitment to this important area of academic research.”
The Nonlinear Dynamics for Advanced Technologies and Engineering Design symposium will take place at the University’s King’s College Conference Centre from tomorrow (Tuesday July 27) until Friday (July 30).
